    • As with the Cole family, James Jones was a member of the United Brethren and was introduced to Mormonism by Wilford Woodruff. He was a bootmaker from Alfrick, married, and had seven children. His first wife died in Nauvoo in 1844. He was endowed to her in the Nauvoo Temple 31 Jan 1846.

      Sometime between 1844 and 1846 he married Mary James, widow of John Cole from Broom's Hill, Herefordshire. In late May 1846 they headed west.

      James died of cholera on 8 Aug 1846 somewhere on the plains of Iowa. His daughter Hannah traveled with Willard Richards. Peter stayed with Mary Cole and her children. Daughter Mary traveled with the Russells.

      "I long for the day to come when I can see you face to face. I am married to John Cole's widow from Broom's Hill. We are doing well. (I) have 11 head of Hereford cattle, a flock of sheep and other stock-(We) intend starting west in a few days. (I) shall write to you the first opportunity, and I hope you will answer the same soon."
