    Notes
    • My paternal grandfather’s name was Anders Nilsson whose wife’s name was Ingrid Svenson.

I do no know the places of their birth, but I do know where they were married and where they lived while raising their family. It was in a village called Boterstena, Eksocken. They had a family of seven children, three dead and four living—two sons and two daughters, Britta Stina and Johanna, and my father Anders Gustaf.

I recalled my grandfather as a tall straight man with dark hair and brown eyes. His clothing was like a Quaker’s, a high hat, long coat with short cape, knee breeches, homemade stockings with red garters, low shoes in the summer, and high boots in the winter. He had the name of being a very stern man, mean to his wife and children he was drunk which was often because they had their own distillery and made their own whiskey. He was a farmer and owned a lot of land being regarded as one of the leading men in Boterstena. Grandmother, his wife, was a mild good woman, very sickly toward the close of her life so that she had to use crutches. I was only five months old when she died, so I do not know anything about her except what was told me by my father.

Uncle Johannes married a girl from Boja who had money. Her name was Greta Anderson. They had two children, one son and one daughter whose names were Johan Gutaf and Ida Mathilda. Ida was born on the 8th of August 1848, and Johan Gustaf in 1851, in Styrud Eksocken.

Aunt Britta Stina was married twice, the first husband dying shortly after the wedding. She had a daughter by him. His name was Jacob Forsberg and the daughter’s name was Josephina Charlotta. The second husband’s name was Anders Ahlson. With him she had five children, two sons and three daughters, Emma, Selma, and Hanna, the sons being Ausgust and Samfrid. Samfrid was killed in the forest by a tree falling on him. I was in Norkeping when it happened.

My Aunt Johanna was married to a rich man named Sven Larson. He was a farmer with much land and livestock, horses, oxen, cows, sheep, swine, and poultry. Their home was a long way from where we lived and the place was called Norrby Vad, Skaraborgs Lan. We all lived in Skaraborgs Lan.

I was seven or eight years old the first time that I saw Aunt Johanna’s home. I can remember how glad I was, because I had heard so much about their having a two story house with many rooms, etc. When father drove up to the house, Uncle Sven came and met us and Aunt Johanna stood on the steps of the house. She was very glad to see father; took him in her arms saying, “O, how glad I am to see you Gustaf.” We lived so far from each other, that it was sometimes one or two years between visits. Aunt Johanna was a quiet good women, like unto her mother my father said. What good food! My first taste of goose was at my aunt’s. Uncle Sven and Aunt Johanna had eight children, five sons and three daughters; the sons according to age were named August, per, Johan, and Erick, and the daughters, Augusta, Maria, and Hanna. They were all born at the same place, but I do not know what years. I do know that Augusta and I were the same age and that August, per, and Johan were older. All of Uncle’s children had good schooling, August learned surveying, Per farming. August emigrated to America but did not marry. Augusta learned to weave fine fabrics such as spreads, curtains, etc. Maria was a school teacher. The first railroad train that I ever saw was at Moholm’s station near Uncle’s home. I still recall to memory how it appeared as it came in to the station. What a wonder!

We were of the Lutheran religion. All our relatives were Godfearing people. I had never seen anybody working on Sunday before I came to America. To work on Sunday was against the law in Sweden, and it was a real shame to disregard the law. On Sunday we went to Church; and if we could not go, the Lutheran creed was read at home in stead. In our home we had a Lutheran service book with all the sermons from the first Sunday in January to the last in December. Uncle was as strict in religion as he was in all other things. He would read the sermon on Sunday if he was not in Church, and it was not healthy for any of his family who did not sit quietly and listen to his voice. They were fearful of the punishment—which he did not spare. My father, when he was not in Church (on Sunday) also read the Sermon from the service book, and all of us children and adults had to sit still and hear it; but father was kind to his family.

The Lutheran religion taught that christening or baptism was essential immediately after birth because if a child died without
