    Notes
    • Mary Jane was one of a family of six children living in Massachusetts.

After her marriage to James Sanderson, she was blessed with two daughters and one son. They were active members of the Methodist Church in Connecticut. Her brother, Quartus, a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, converted Mary Jane and her family. They would sit up late at night, reading and listening to him preach the gospel. They were baptized in 1842 and soon started their tedious trek to Nauvoo, stopping at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania over the next winter for lack of funds.

They arrived in Nauvoo in the summer of 1843, and lived just one block north of the Prophetís home. Her husband and son were working on the Prophetís farm at the time of the martyrdom.

They moved to St. Louis, Missouri for better employment finding work in a shoe factory. Later moved on a farm just three miles out of the city. The ground was swampy and they all became ill. Her husband became very ill and Mary Jane had to take him back to the city where he later died. It was very difficult for her, but somehow she managed to take his body and the children back to Nauvoo where he was buried.

For a time she rented a log house in Nauvoo from Moses Martin Sanders. Later she married him as a plural wife. Two years later she was called to mourn the loss of her daughter, Mary Jane, at the age of eight. She found it very difficult to leave after her death and move west across the plains to this Valley.

After arriving in the Salt Lake Valley they made their first home in Fort Union, south of Salt Lake. In the Spring of 1854, they were called to Fort Supply in Wyoming. The winters were very severe and sometimes Mary Jane and her husband would have to return to Salt Lake and then return in the spring.

In 1857, Johnstonís Army was planning an attack on the fort so the settlers were told to abandon the area and to burn the fort. They went to Fillmore, then to Mt. Pleasant and then were called to help settle Fairview.

Years later, Mary Jane and her husband moved to St. George. Here they were living when he died at the age of seventy-nine.

Mary Jane became very ill and moved back to Fairview to live with her son and family. They cared for her for ten years. She did a lot of teaching in different church organizations and much temple work during her life. She was called on to make many moves to many places throughout her life.
