    Notes
    • Amanda was the fifth child in her family. Before she was sixteen years old, she married Moses Martin Sanders, age twenty-three.

Her life was one move after another and always to new frontiers where it was very difficult and often dangerous. She was indeed a helpmate and companion to her husband.

They lived in Montgomery, Illinois; Far West, Missouri; Quincy, Illinois and then Nauvoo. Their family was among the first residents of Nauvoo and neighbors of the Prophet’s family.

Amanda received a Patriarchal Blessing, September 21, 1844, by the Patriarch John Smith. Her husband being a city policeman in Nauvoo was gone a great deal of the time leaving her alone with the children. Her blessing told her that she not only shared in the priesthood of her husband but in the absence of the Elders, she should have power to heal her children by the laying on of hands, and that she should have a son who would have many children, this was a comfort to her.

Amanda received her endowments in the Nauvoo Temple on January 3, 1845, and sealed to her husband on January 20, 1846. Amanda Sanders’ name appears on the roll of the Nauvoo Relief Society.

Again driven from their home they went to Winter Quarters. During the terrible winter of 1846-1847 they lost their daughter, Eliza Jane. her oldest living son, Richard left with the Mormon Battalion never to be seen again in this life.

After being in Council Bluffs, Iowa they left for Utah. After three years in the valley she gave birth to a baby boy. She looked upon him as the child promised in the blessing and indeed he lived to father twenty-eight children with three wives.

Amanda helped pioneer Mt. Pleasant and Fairview in 1859. Then in 1865, they were called to the Dixie Cotton Mission near St. George. Then they bought a ranch with a saw mill that furnished lumber for the temple and other buildings.

A few years later Moses built Amanda a red adobe home in St. George. While living here she lost her companion of fifty-two years. Amanda then moved back to Fairview.

In 1881, she and some of her sons answered the call to help colonize Arizona. They moved to Tonto Basin, Arizona. This move was about the twelfth move she had made and proved to be her last. She passed away on April 24, 1885 and was buried in Tonto Basin, now Gisela County, Arizona. Amanda was truly a pioneer.
