Agnes and her husband belonged to the Presbyterian Church. They met the missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840’s, accepted the gospel, and were baptized.

Eager to come to America and be with the Saints, Archibald came first in 1855, leaving Agnes and the family behind as there was only enough money for one person to come. On March 23, 1856, Agnes and her children were able to leave Scotland for America. After arriving in Iowa City, on May 12, 1856, they had to wait four weeks before they could commence their journey across the Plains. Agnes and her children were assigned to the Daniel McArthur Handcart Company. They pulled their cart from ten to twenty five miles a day and slept on the ground at night. They arrived in Salt Lake Valley, September 26, 1856.

The family moved to Spanish Fork in 1857. In 1880, they moved to Fairview, Utah, which became their permanent home and the place where their ultimate dream was being fulfilled.
