      !A full-page , 1-inch headline in the COLUSA SUN-HERALD 22 Jan 1957 read:

      ! DR.TILLOTSON DIES OF INJURY

!Funeral services for Dr. Joseph E. Tillotson, who died last night will be held
tomorrow in Colusa and interment will be made later in Ogden, Utah, the
surgeon's birthplace. Dr. Tillotson died without gaining consciousness after
the accident in which his car crashed into a drainage ditch Saturday. This
community and county today mourned the untimely and tragic death of Dr. Joseph
      E. Tillotson, 53, widely known surgeon, specialist in cancer treatment and the
County Physician. Dr. Tillotson made special studies in the fields of surgery
and the treatment of cancer abroad, at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland,
London and Paris. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He
wrote several scientific articles for medical and surgical periodicals.

!The Sun-Herald also published later, the acceptance of the Staff of the Colusa
Memorial Hospital, with great appreciation, the endowment made by Mrs.
Josephine Tillotson, wife of the doctor of his personal medical library, a very
valuable collection of scientific books. The hospital, of which Dr. Joseph E.
Tillotson was a director had planned to make a medical library a project for
the coming year and it would have required at least five years to get it
reasonably started. By the benevolence and kindness of Mrs. Tillotson
at least four of those medical library development years are taken
care of. A plaque has been placed on the door of Dr. Tillotson's room at the
hospital in his memory and some of the furnishings have been received. The
balance is now in order. This has been made possible by contributions of the
late doctor's many friends and patients.
